Fire crews have been called to a chemical incident at Carnoustie police station.
A member of the public is believed to have uncovered a canister of Cymag – a potentially lethal poison most commonly used to kill vermin or pests – in the loft of a house.
The alert was raised when the container was taken into the police station, although it’s not yet known if the contents pose any danger.
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “Someone has found a can of a chemical in their loft while the house is being renovated, and they’ve taken that into the police station.
“We don’t know if it’s sealed or unsealed yet.
“We have one pump there from Carnoustie and one from Balmossie, and the heavy rescue unit from Macalpine Road in Dundee.
“The call came in at 5.35pm. We believe the chemical is Cymag.”
The chemical is said to turn into hydrogen cyanide when it is mixed with water.
One resident living nearby told the Tele: “One of the firemen said it was a chemical alert. There were a lot of people around.
“There are a lot of fire engines taking up the street.
“There were also police there and an ambulance, and people wearing white suits.”
