The family of a Tayside man killed in a crash at the weekend have paid tribute to his “huge character”.

Ewen Chisholm, 47, from Kirriemuir, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in Midlothian at 3.40pm on Saturday.

In a statement on behalf of the family, Ewen’s brother Jamie said they had been “overwhelmed” by the support and messages received in the aftermath of his death.

Jamie said: “We as a family are in a huge state of shock and still re-grouping from far and wide.

“Ewen was a huge character, who only cared about others, leaving us all and hundreds of friends with a big loss.

“The support and messages have been overwhelming and give us all great strength.

“Support and protection of his immediate family are now our priority, so we kindly ask for everyone’s help with this.”

Jamie told the Tele that a 14-year-old boy who was hospitalised following the crash had been left physically unhurt.

The child was a passenger in the red Citroen Berlingo involved in the crash and had been taken by ambulance to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary as a precaution.

The incident took place on the A6094 in Howgate, Midlothian, at 3.40pm on Saturday.

The road was closed in both directions for several hours to allow police to conduct investigations at the scene.

Police Scotland is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash and has asked any witnesses who have not yet come forward to contact them.

Sergeant Neil Inglis said: “Inquiries into this collision continue.

“Our sincere condolences remain with the family of the driver at this very difficult time.

“We’ve spoken to a number of people so far but anyone who witnessed this and who has not yet been in touch is urged to come forward.”

Police added that anyone with information should contact them on 101.

In the aftermath of the incident, tributes were also paid on social media to Ewen, who was a keen cyclist.

One post, by Team Leslie Bike Shop, said: “It’s a very sad day today waking up and realising that it wasn’t a dream and that the world of mountain biking had indeed lost a true gentleman.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all Ewen’s family and friends.

“It was an honour and pleasure to have known you Ewen.

“You always took everything in your stride and offered me many words of wisdom. Rip big fella x.”

Tracy Bernard said: “Ewen Chisholm was a true gent, a pleasure to work with.

“This life has lost a good man in the most tragic of ways. Rest in peace boss man.”
