Fears over speeding as drivers dodge Kingsway

Residents have demanded council chiefs look in to more traffic calming measures on a nearby road after saying wreckless driving has gone too far.

People living in the Middleton Farm road area, behind Fintry, say they have had enough of cars driving at high speeds past their homes.

The issue has led to a petition being drafted up asking Angus Council, who maintains the road, to erect signs to enforce traffic to slow down.

The petition is set to be handed in to the council.

Jim McGaughay, who lives in the area, said high-speed driving has led to his dog being knocked down and damage to his garage after a crash.

The 59-year-old said: “There are more than 20 people who have signed the petition calling for further road measures.

“Drivers use this road as a rat run to avoid the traffic lights at Claverhouse.

“Since the roadworks started on the Kingsway, it has got worse. But there have been cars speeding along the road for the last seven years. It’s very dangerous and it’s got to the point where we have had enough.

“We are mainly worried about the children in the area.”

Brian Gordon, councillor for Dundee North East, said: “This is a road that is the responsibility of Angus Council but the residents on the south side reside in the city’s North East ward.

“They are frustrated by the rat run that is being created by drivers dodging the Kingsway.

“This traffic has been building up over the last few months and now is exacerbated by the current partial closure of the Kingsway.

“This petition will be sent to Angus Council asking it to look at this road again in the hope that traffic calming measures can be introduced before a serious accident occurs.”

A spokesman for Angus Council said: “We have not received a petition as yet.

“Should we receive any correspondence, our roads officers will be happy to investigate and discuss the matter further with residents.”
