You have got just one week left to get your nominations in for the Evening Telegraph Community Spirit Awards.
The awards will honour those who make a real difference to the lives of people in this area.
In the run-up to nominations closing on December 9, we’ve been speaking to another award-winning community group to share their story.
Making the leap from primary school to secondary is a major milestone in the life of every child as they grow up.
However, youngsters across Tayside will be prepared for the change thanks to Safe Taysiders.
The long-running community initiative saw 1,500 schoolchildren from across Tayside and Fife presented with 10 scenarios based on challenges they could face in real life.
This year’s three-week event, held at Baluniefield police station, featured a burning building, a kite stuck on a pylon and a stranger attempting to lure kids on a Pokemon Go hunt.
Pupils were also told how to deal with issues such as drugs and alcohol, internet safety and peer pressure.
Programme coordinator Claire Ramsay said: “Some are real issues to see how the children would deal with that particular situation. How many young people have ever had to phone 999? And how would they know what to say and what they could be asked?”
Claire said winning the award had given the scheme a big boost, adding: “We got the backing of agencies we had not used before. The police didn’t think we could have the event at Baluniefield this year — the award helped with that. We can say we’re award-winning now.
“We have to stay current. We ask the young people questions about whether they think there’s anything we could add in. The teachers love it too.”
The Community Spirit Awards ceremony, sponsored by Angus Council Fostering and Adoption, will be held in February. Laura Adam, of DC Thomson’s events team, urged people to get nominating.
She added: “We want to hear all the heart-warming stories of those groups and individuals who have gone above and beyond, given exceptional care, fundraised for a worthy cause, inspired those around them or who went the extra mile to protect others.
“Whatever it may be, we know they deserve a huge thanks for their work in the community. Nominate them now before entries close.”
