The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) has issued a flood alert for Dundee and Tayside.

Parts of Scotland and northern England were battered by torrential rain over the weekend as Storm Desmond hit the country.

Record rainfall levels in the area were exceeded and more heavy rain is expected to hit parts of the UK this week.

More than 100mm of rain fell in the Borders on Friday and Saturday, according to Met Office figures.

The River Tay in Perth reached its highest level in a decade and there were fears it would burst its banks in Perth flooding the city centre.

Perthshire was already under a SEPA flood warning, but today that has been extended to Dundee and Angus. Residents are being warned to ‘be prepared’.

A statement from SEPA read: “Heavy rain during Monday will cause a rise in river levels from the afternoon, and overnight into Tuesday, giving a risk of flooding. Due to the saturated ground, small watercourses may be overwhelmed and there may be some surface water flooding.

“Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property.”
