Trains between Dundee and Aberdeen have started running again after flooding caused the line to close overnight.

Commuters were left facing severe disruption last night and this morning after all services were cancelled at around 4.15pm yesterday.

Services were getting as far as Arbroath before being turned back to Dundee due to the water levels.

Train providers put on buses for passengers between the stations, however the replacement vehicles also faced difficulty with flooding on the A90.

Network Rail said today that extensive flooding at three stations forced them to shut the line. Inverkeilor was the worst with train tracks under 4ft of water over 100m during the evening yesterday.

A spokesman said that the water began to receed at 4am, but the line could not be re-opened until a visual inspection had been carried out.

He added that services should begin to return to normal, but there is a temporary speed restriction of 5mph at one point along the line.

A ScotRail Alliance spokeswoman said:  “Train services to and from Aberdeen have begun returning to normal but residual delays may occur until around lunchtime.”
