Police in Tayside have launched a murder probe after human remains were discovered in a residential property.
Significant police activity was seen in the John Street and Market Street areas of Montrose this afternoon.
Officers were called to an address in the Angus town shortly before midnight as part of an ongoing missing person inquiry.
One eyewitness said bins were cordoned off.
No details of the victim have been released.
A man has been detained and assisting police officers.
A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said in a statement: “Police Scotland can confirm that remains, which are believed to be human, have been found at a residential property in the Market Street area of Montrose.
“Officers attended at the address at around 11.55pm last night as part of an ongoing missing person inquiry.
“The investigation into the circumstances is in the very early stages of establishing who the remains belong to and how that person died.
“Our inquiries have taken us to a number of address in the Montrose area where there is likely to be a police presence for some considerable time.
“A man has been detained and is assisting us with inquiries.”
