A 39-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a woman in a Tayside town.
The move follows the discovery of human remains — believed to be those of Kimberley Mackenzie — at flats in Montrose.
The man accused of being involved in her death, Steven Jackson, is set to appear in Forfar Sheriff Court on Monday.
A further person has been detained and is assisting officers with their inquiries.
Police were giving no details of the deceased or of the missing person inquiry which led to the find.
However, pals said the alleged victim was a mother-of-three who originally came from the town.
A family member was too upset to speak when approached by the Tele on Friday afternoon.
Detective Superintendent, David McLaren, said: “There will be a large police presence in the area for some time as we continue with the complex investigation at a number of properties.
“This is an extremely unusual incident and I would like to reassure the public that it is contained matter.”
He continued: “A man has now been charged and is expected to appear in court on Monday.
“At this stage formal identification of the deceased has not been done and further information will be released in due course.”
The murder inquiry was instigated on Wednesday night when officers were called to the area as part of what they have described as a missing person hunt.
A large police presence was seen in Montrose, with several bins cordoned off.
Community leaders told the Tele of their shock at the death.
Montrose councillor Bill Duff said: “I got a call from the police and they let me know what was going on.
“I know that human remains have been found and that there was a cordon at a premises in the town.
“There is still a very heavy police presence in Montrose and I think there will be for a few days at least – that is the way it looks anyway.
“The bins service was also stopped about the town.
“I have had word that they are back on now though.
“It is shocking. I don’t have any idea who is involved or what happened.
“In a small place like Montrose you just don’t expect this kind of thing to happen.
“I am sure that everyone in the town will be as shocked as me.
“I, like everyone else, am now waiting for any new developments and letting the police carry out their investigation.”
Another councillor from Montrose, David May, said: “Some people I have spoken to in the town have concerns.
“I have tried to reassure them that the police information will be available as soon as possible.
“It’s been a shock for a lot of people in Montrose but until the details are made public it will remain a worry.
“I’ve been trying to reassure members of the public as much as possible.
“The police are doing what they can.”
