A rare albino pipistrelle bat has been caught on camera in Tayside for the first time.

The creature was filmed by Brian Whyte in his garden in Monikie.

The video above shows the creature seeming to stick to the walls of Brian’s home.

He said: “It was quite fluttery and we were surprised to see it out.

“We normally don’t see any bats here until it’s dark so it may still be around.  It seemed in my mind to like to like the camouflage of the magnolia walls.”

The albino condition turns the animal pale due to a lack of pigmentation in its skin and leaves it more vulnerable to predators of the night such as tawny and barn owls.

Dr Amanda Wilson, chairwoman of the Tayside Bat Group said: “We’ve certainly never come across anything like this before and Tayside Bat Group dates back several decades so we feel this is probably a very rare and exciting find right on our doorstep.”

The common pipistrelle is one of the UK’s most common bat species, however less than half a dozen reports of albino bat sightings are recorded.
